Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil Hair Treatment - GIVEAWAY!!!

Coconut oil has been used for hair treatment in coconut producing countries such as India and the Philippines for thousands of years. Studies in India have been done on how effective various oils are on treating damaged hair. The study compared mineral oil, sunflower oil, and coconut oil because these were the three most commonly used oils in hair treatment products used in India. The aim of this study was to cover different treatments, and the effect of these treatments on various hair types using these three oils. The number of experiments to be conducted was a very high number, and a technique termed as the "Taguchi Design of Experimentation" was used.

Their results:
The findings clearly indicate the strong impact that coconut oil application has to hair as compared to application of both sunflower and mineral oils. Among three oils, coconut oil was the only oil found to reduce the protein loss remarkably for both undamaged and damaged hair when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product. Both sunflower and mineral oils do not help at all in reducing the protein loss from hair. This difference in results could arise from the composition of each of these oils. Coconut oil, being a triglyceride of lauric acid (principal fatty acid), has a high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, is able to penetrate inside the hair shaft. Mineral oil, being a hydrocarbon, has no affinity for proteins and therefore is not able to penetrate and yield better results. In the case of sunflower oil, although it is a triglyceride of linoleic acid, because of its bulky structure due to the presence of double bonds, it does not penetrate the fiber, consequently resulting in no favorable impact on protein loss. (Rele AS, Mohile RB. "Effect of mineral oil, sunflower oil, and coconut oil on prevention of hair damage." Journal Cosmetology Science 2003 Mar-Apr;54(2):175-92.)

I like to use the Tropical Traditions hair treatment after I shampoo. I let the jar sit in the bottom of the tub and allow the warm water to run over it to soften it. The I cover my hair with it, focusing on the tips. I sit and relax or do my shaving and then I rinse out the treatment. I follow with two vigorous shampoos and then conditioner.

At first, I used once a week, but it has seemed to fortify my hair and now I think I'll try once a month.

Depending on your individual hair type, you will know how many times to shampoo after the treatment and how often you need to use the treatment.

I will say one thing I have noticed after several treatments, my hair started off difficult to run my fingers through. Currently, it is much nicer. I have had my hair in a pony all day and I just pulled the band out and ran my fingers straight through my hair. Normally I only get those results if my hair is straightened and with a silicone based shine product. The results I just had are from around the house, cleaning the house, pony hair. I attribute this to using Tropical Traditions Hair Treatment.

Just note that it can leave your hair feeling greasy - you have to adjust the process to fit your hair type. Just knowing that it's natural, been used in hair for centuries, and there are no chemicals in this product makes it well worth playing with it to find how it best suits you.

ENVIROSAX ~ Giveaway !!!!

I have gotten to the point that I never use plastic anymore. It was a gradual process.

First I was using the bulky eco-shoppers that you can pick up at the stores - you know the ugly green ones. I forgot those most of the time and got tired of buying them at $1 a piece every time I went shopping. I forgot them because they were bulky and inconvenient - non mobile.

Then I got a set that was great and that I still use. They are sturdy, washable, and very portable. They scrunch up small - 5 to a sheath, or small enough to throw in your purse. The problem with those was just forgetting to bring them with me. I would get to the store and realize I had forgotten them and turn around and go home to get them. 

Getting tired of defeating my eco - purpose, using more gas that the darn bags were worth, I got myself on a schedule that works and now I never have to use the dreaded plastic. I'm proud of myself because it really was important to me not to use plastic, but it was a process to get there. It feels good.

Why am I soooo worried about using plastic grocery bags??? Because 1 bag take 1000 years to bio-degrade in a landfill. And while it's bio- degrading the plastic is being leached into the soil and water. I want no part of it.

When cashiers comment on my bags, I give them the whole spiel - some of them look at me like I'm nuts and they will continue to be fine with using plastic. Some really are shocked and I can tell would like to make better choices too.

ENVIROSAX are super great because they take eco-shoppers to a whole new level. I want to start collecting them just because of their amazing designs. ENVIROSAX  are the celebrities of the eco- bag world.

We chose "Rusty" from the kids series (pictured above). I thought it would be a good idea to get Julien involved in being responsible for not only his environment, but for helping be responsible for the food that he will be eating. It's another way to stress the importance of every person in this family helping to make this family work.
