Do you still hand write letters?
Me either. Not nearly as much as I should. With email and Facebook, and so little time in a day, I just don't.
I remember as a child -my Mother instilled in me the importance of thank you cards. I also had a Grandfather who lived in Saudi Arabia. The main way I communicated with him was through mail. Back then the choice was mail or phone.
The whole process was exciting for me. I remember sitting down to compose a letter for him - thinking of all the most important, exciting goings on in my life to tell him. Thinking of questions I wanted to ask him. Drawing pictures to enclose for him.
Checking the mail daily until that wonderful day his return letter arrived! His letters were always typed on crisp vellum stationery. He was a professor of English and taught English to collage students as a foreign language, so his perfect structure & grammar taught me as I read the colorful stories of his everyday life - what he was having for lunch, a new pet bird, a painting he was working on, a rug her bartered for at a local market.
In that correspondence that we held for many years, I gained a love of and true appreciation for the process of the hand written letter.
I have also taught my children the importance of the thank you card. They have not, however, had the wonderful experience of writing letters. My son who is becoming familiar with writing, has a Nanna in Greece. As I sit here writing this post, I am realizing that the next step is that I will pass the wonderful torch of writing letters to him. I am excited that I will be able to help him develop the same love and appreciation for a fading art, that I had as a young girl.

And maybe I'll start writing again too :)
